Since the analysis of total cells does not represent the specific changes that occur at the organelle level, it is important to determine the lipid composition of each organelle. Lipidomics is the systematic analysis of lipids and molecules that interact with lipids in biological samples. Mitochondria are essential organelles in many processes such as intermediate metabolism, energy harvesting, immune response, and autophagy. Recently, mitochondrial research ( including their number, morphology, and functions) has become the focus of aging and age-related diseases. Mitochondrial function depends on the lipid environment for mitochondrial fission fusion, oxidative phosphorylation and mitochondrial bioenergetics. Moreover, the recruitment and activity of several mitochondrial proteins are also dependent on the lipid environment. Mitochondrial lipid homeostasis is closely related to mitochondrial function, yet little is known about the composition and role of mitochondrial lipids.
